WILDCARD CHIEFS RUN THE TABLE - HALT 49ers IMPRESSIVE SEASON
Summary courtesy of Robert Parrish
The inaugural Championship game for the LOC saw the San Francisco 49ers (Rob Rusch) hosting the Kansas City Chiefs (Bob Parish) and it turned out to be a humdinger. But as usual things don't quite turn out like you might expect. The Chiefs ended up the game with 30 yards rushing on 11 carries, but three were carried in for touchdowns. The 49ers ended up with 6 turnovers but yet converting 7 of 14 3rd down conversions. Hillman ran for 126 yards on 15 carries and Manning would throw the pigskin 51 times. SF held the ball for 37:10 versus the Chiefs 22:50. Essentially, the Chiefs offense was stymied by the 49ers defense. Yet the Chiefs defense ended up with the checkmate stopping two 49er drives with failed 4th down conversions and then the 6 takeaways were too much for Coach Rob to overcome.
Eli Manning started out the game smokin' hot as he completed 7 of 8 passes on the opening drive for the 49ers and ended with a scoring toss to Allen Robinson from 13 yards out. After each team punted, Carson Palmer was intercepted by Safety Tartt, but Manning returned the favor by putting one inside Marcus Peters radar range for a Chiefs complimentary interception. Then Palmer seeing the 49ers cheating up for a run found Torrey Smith for a 70 yard score. The subsequent 49er drive saw Manning maneuver the 49ers close to the Chief end zone only to have Manning fumble on a scramble which was covered by Charles Woodson - Chiefs ball (Whew). Near the end of the half, Ronnie Hillman then got hot for the 49ers and helped get them in position. Manning then found his favorite end zone target, Antonio Gates for a go ahead TD. Halftime score SF 14 and KC 7.
Early in the second half Manning made another mistake and Aqib Talib caught his pass ending up in good position in SF territory. A sack by DT Quentin Dial on Palmer put the Chiefs in a hole, but a series of passes to Hilton and Riddick got Devonta Freeman in close where he dived over for the game tying score. Later with San Francisco at midfield, rookie Chris Jones wrestled Manning down and another fumble was pounced upon by Preston Smith. In a change of pace young Dak Prescott came on for the Chiefs and on his second drive found paydirt with an 8 yard scramble. Another Manning fumble caused by Whitney Mercilus and another interception by Talib slammed the door on the 49ers comeback bid. Freeman would score once more and Dustin Hopkins made a short FG. Manning lead a late drive and capped it with a 28 yard pass to Sammy Watkins plus a two point conversion. Final score Kansas City 31 and San Francisco 22.
Game MVP honors went to CB Aqib Talib with 2 Int's and 11 tackles. Chiefs management then required the former Kansas Jayhawk to only party in gun-free establishments.
Rob Rusch deserved better, as he called a very challenging game. and built a season record to be proud of, but as we all know ActionPC's vagarities can ruin anyone's day. But Lady Luck was with the Chiefs during the playoffs.
